THE SPECIAL OFFICE FOR LATIN American Initiatives (SOLAI) builds bridges and enhances educational opportunities for students, professors, researchers and administrators from Latin American higher education institutions and governments. SOLAI creates collaborative networks based on principles of professional and academic excellence. SOLAI develops non-profit and innovative strategies to connect universities and scientific communities from Latin America with prestigious academic and research programs at UNM, the only Hispanic Serving Institution recognized as a Very High Research University by the Carnegie Mellon Foundation.

College Enrichment & Outreach Programs
“Research Oportunity Program”

Recognizing that diversity of scholars is integral to educational excellence, the Research Opportunity Program seeks to produce scholars and researchers who will more accurately reflect the growing diversity in intellectual perspectives, life experiences, and cultures in academe. the program is committed to increasing the number of students in doctoral degree
programs who come from low-income and first generation backgrounds.

SOLAI-Latin American Outreach Programs in conjunction with College Enrichment & Outreach Programs-ROP, invite you to participate in its “Latin American Research Program, Summer 2010” at the main campus at UNM, this June 20-July 10, 2010.

·         This Research Program offers students from Latin American Higher Institutions the opportunity to nurture their academic goals throw offering seminars and workshops on research process, and personal and professional presentation skills, including practices on GRA exam.
·         These workshops and seminars are designed to enhance their abilities to achieve academic goals. Additionally, scholars are offered academic advisement, tutoring,
participation in cultural events and travel to present at research conferences.
·         Students participating in the program are required to spend classroom time on the research project, meet regularly with the program advisor, and attend workshops, lectures, and meetings. In addition, students must complete a summer research project, present a written abstract and an oral presentation, and submit a ­final research paper reflecting the time spent on the project.


ELIGIBILITY
All participants are selected on a competitive basis. Apply if you: 1. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (7.5 in scale of 10); 2. Are determined to pursue master or doctoral studies; 3. Are a Latin American Student from any university with a MOU signed with SOLAI; 4. Are enrolled in the last 2 semester of your bachelor, working in your thesis or if you are in admissions process for a master degrees; 5. Research Project; 6. TOFEL of 450 points.


APPLICATION
Fill out the attached SOLAI-College Enrichment & Outreach Program application packet. A
complete application includes: 1. A Completed & Signed SOLAI Application Form;
2. Personal Statement (must be no longer that 250 words); 3. Two Letters of Recommendation 4. Copy of the MOU; 5. Academic Transcript; and 6. Research Project


APPLICATION DEADLINES
It is currently taking applications into April 9.
Accepted proposal will be af­rmed by invitation by April 16, 2010.
All materials must be submitted to SOLAI-LAO Programs. 262 Student Services Center,

·         There are available 10 scholarship that cover, solely: registration, instruction and medical insurance. This programs is sponsored by the Division for Student Affairs.
·         All other expenses sucha as airplane tickets, lodging, meals and so forth must be paid by the applicants interested and accepted in this program.
·         If you are accepted, you will receive free of charges the form I-20 that is the of­cial UNM documentation to process your student visa directly in the consulate or embassy of the USA in your country of origin. Previously you must turn in a copy of your passport and the SOLAI application form.
